From MVP to Marketplace: Lessons from Hong Kong's Female Founders
March 30, 2026
This spring, Fēnxiǎng had two chances to share the story behind the business: a female founders panel in Hong Kong on 30 March, and an episode of Valerie Moore's Purpose & Meaning podcast, recorded on 7 May.
Both conversations came back to one idea. The best way to build a business is to get out into the real world and talk to customers.
Speaking on a female founders panel in Hong Kong
On 30 March, we joined a panel of female founders to talk about building Fēnxiǎng from a minimum viable product (MVP) into a full fashion marketplace.
Fēnxiǎng began with a simple observation. After moving to Hong Kong, we found a gap between high-street fashion and high-end luxury, and no easy way to buy and sell the great contemporary pieces in between.
We didn't wait for a perfect plan. We launched a simple version, put it in front of real people and learned from every conversation.
Why customers beat a perfect business plan
It is tempting to stay behind a spreadsheet until everything feels ready. But a business plan can't tell you what makes someone list their favourite dress, or what stops a buyer from checking out.
Customers can. Here's what talking to them taught us:
• Build the smallest useful version first. An MVP shows you what people want faster than any forecast.
• Listen more than you pitch. Every seller and buyer conversation shaped how Fēnxiǎng works today.
• Be willing to change direction. Our model has evolved as we learned how our community likes to shop.
• Bootstrapping keeps you close to the customer. Without outside investment, every decision has to earn its place.
A huge thank you to Leanne and Gianne for having us on the panel.
Purpose & Meaning: building with intention
On 7 May, we recorded an episode of Valerie Moore's Purpose & Meaning podcast. We talked about purpose, building with intention and the journey behind Fēnxiǎng — from the first idea to a peer-to-peer marketplace that keeps fashion in circulation across Hong Kong and Singapore.
For us, purpose isn't a slogan. It's the reason we keep going on the hard days: a belief that great clothes deserve more than one owner.

Building in public
Whether you're a founder at the MVP stage or someone curious about circular fashion, we hope these conversations show that you don't need everything figured out to start.
